Katie,
Done good!
At least as well as anyone could describe Addis Ababa. One can not adequately describe the sounds, smells, squalor, beauty, sense of history, sense of poverty, sense of hopelessness, sense of excitement..................nothing quite adds up. It is a bit like a joke that doesn't translate:

you show interesting wall paintings, the painting is from lake Tana monastries especially Zegie peninsula monastry. I grew here. Still now I haven't seen any historical places but when I look your wab site, It helps to know Ethiopia very well. Thanks.

For very obvious reasons this is my favourite post in the entire Ethiopia blog so far; you'll have your work cut out for you if you've any intention of topping it (in my eyes) before you're back in Blighty. Jesuits, military history, Indo-Portuguese influences on architecture -- if I didn't know better I'd almost say you were pandering to my enthusiasms here.... Pedro Páez (Susneyos's, or Sissinius's, shrewdly suave spiritual advisor) is of course one of the very great Jesuit missionaries -- shame his successor Fr. Mendes SJ was such a Muppet.

the fuzziness about birthdays seems to be pan-african - it makes me laugh when certain african footballers , who seem to have been around for ever and look about 35 with a few wrinkles already on their face , claim to be '21' so they can command higher prices in the transfer market - and noone can disprove it!

ive decided to take a leaf out of their book - my own birthdate has suddenly become shrouded in mystery. for the purposes of my new CV, i am '11' , making a university degree and 2 years as a financial analyst seem quite breathtaking, for someone so young...

happy birthday btw ! X

It's officially your birthday (in GMT at least) so felicitations to you, and congratulations to myself for remembering that there was no way you'd be able to check Facebook today. Thumbs down to me, though, for having failed to realise till right now that you probably don't have internet access at the moment. Be that as it may, Happy Birthday.

Hi Katie - this is absolutely fascinating (and you're a great writer). I too held some of the same preconceptions about Ethiopia, it's good to hear about the sense of national pride. I'm also quite interested to hear how it sounds like some things can be very modern, whilst others quite antiquated and poor (for someone who has never been anywhere in Africa, the notions are always of widespread famine and poverty). Very cool blog... and Happy Birthday!

On the wine front - I can't find Barolo in Calgary. I may not have gone to right wine shop yet, however on my search thus far, nothing. Not impressed.

Hi Katie I hope you liked the hostel - thanks for offering to support Musbah with his scholarship application. This could be a real opportunity for him. As I mentioned on the phone I will be having a direct meeting with the person who heads up admissions in Abu Dhabi so that may help his application. The start date is September 2010 so he will attend university in Addis this year whatever happens. Have a great time in the North. Best wishes

Rimbaud's house looks extraordinary. What a Patrick Leigh Fermor-style discovery to make.... I'm ignoring the fact that it's probably a tourist trap roughly as authentic as a Minoan fresco 'restored' by Arthur Evans's lads, it seems like just the sort of place a gun-running poet should live and that's the important part. And the view!

Katie, how wonderful to read your first experiences and I am so happy you are having a great time, as do our children by the looks of the photos....GREAT!
Degafa, who is in your photo playing is the cutest and he needs lots of hugs...I am very sad not to be there with you girls but thank you both very much for volunteering with Jenna in Addis and with our projects - it will make a world of a difference to the children and to us, THANK YOU SO MUCH!
Big hugs all around

What an amazing experience Katie, and a very worthy one too. I read your blog with interest, having spent a week in Ethiopia last year and having been 'blown away' by what I saw - Lalibela, Axum, Gondar as well as Addis. All the best, Vassos (Ileana's brother)

It might be too late, and you might have already read it, but "The Emperor" by Rsyzard Kapuscinski is a really good book about Selassie and Ethiopia. And it's short. Good luck! I'll keep tracking your blog for updates.
